Woman Photographs Herself Receiving Strange Looks in Public

“I now reverse the gaze and record their reactions to me while I perform mundane tasks in public spaces. I seek out spaces that are visually interesting and geographically diverse. I try to place myself in compositions that contain feminine icons or advertisements. Otherwise, I position myself and the camera in a pool of people…and wait.

The images capture the gazer in a microsecond moment where they, for unknowable reasons, have a look on their face that questions my presence. Whether they are questioning my position in front of the lens or questioning my body size, the gazer appears to be visually troubled that I am in front of them.”

It was my son’s birthday this weekend. He invited this little girl who came to school early January. She is a beautiful Eurasian, full of sweetness and poetry, with a huge shyness, too … To tell you, she stand at the front door for almost half an hour without moving or speaking, just looking at the other kids … shaking her head in response to my questions, the hands clenched, shifty eyes, and twisting her mouth … It was very disturbing… and then I sat next to her, I told her about her new class, about my son glad to invite her, and me also. I told her she could do what she wanted here. And then, sitten on the sofa, she continued watching the kids moving everywhere. Together, we selected images, made badges … she finally mingled with other children, ate pancakes … And I looked at her participating to the big battle of balloons! It was great!
